How to Choose the Right LED Screen Technology: SMD / GOB / COB / Mini / Micro LED

When sourcing commercial LED video walls, buyers often get confused by terms like SMD, GOB, COB, Mini‑LED and Micro‑LED. Wrong selection may lead to project risks and extra costs. This article compares the five mainstream LED technologies to help you make the right choice.

This comparison chart shows the physical structure of each technology. One key point to remember: SMD, GOB and COB are modular self-emissive LED panels for large video walls. Mini‑LED is LCD backlight, and Micro‑LED is next-generation display.

SMD (Surface Mounted Device)

SMD is the most traditional & mature LED technology. Individually packaged LED diodes are mounted on the PCB surface.
Pros: Mature supply chain, cost-effective, wide pixel pitch options for indoor & outdoor rental and fixed screens.
Cons: Exposed beads, easy to get damaged, average moisture resistance.
Best for: Standard advertising screens, stage rental LED walls.

GOB (Glue On Board)

GOB is a protective upgrade based on SMD. A transparent glue layer covers the SMD lamp beads.
Pros: Anti-collision, dustproof, better moisture resistance, cheaper than COB.
Cons: Performance limited by the SMD base, not for ultra-fine-pitch high-end projects; the glue layer makes single-lamp on-site repair difficult, typically requiring module replacement or vendor-specific repair processes.
Best for: High-traffic public areas like malls, schools and transport stations.

COB (Chip On Board)

Bare LED chips are directly bonded to the PCB and encapsulated as one unit, with no separate packaged lamp beads.
Pros: Excellent black level, high contrast, reliable, great for fine-pitch indoor screens.
Cons: Higher cost; maintenance is relatively complex and is typically done at the module level, often requiring specialized equipment (e.g., laser repair) rather than easy single-lamp replacement.
Best for: High-end meeting rooms, control rooms, broadcast studios.

Mini-LED (Miniature LED)

Important clarification: Mini-LED is primarily used as LCD backlight (thousands of tiny LEDs deliver local dimming behind LCD panels), but there is also a Mini-LED direct-view route in which Mini-LED chips act as pixels to build modular LED video wall panels. As a backlight, it cannot create seamless large LED video walls; as a direct-view display, it can, but current cost and mass-production maturity limit its adoption in large commercial video walls.
Pros: Improved brightness and contrast for LCD displays; direct-view Mini-LED offers fine pitch and high contrast.
Cons: As a backlight, it cannot create seamless large LED video walls; direct-view Mini-LED remains costly and less mature for large-size commercial mass production.
Best for: TV, monitors, consumer LCD products (backlight); premium fine-pitch direct-view displays (limited commercial scale). Not yet economical for mainstream large commercial video walls.

Micro-LED (Microscopic LED)

Micro-LED uses microscopic self-emissive chips and is regarded as a next-generation display technology.
Pros: Top-tier brightness, contrast, energy efficiency and flexibility.
Cons: High production cost; large-size commercial mass production is limited.
Best for: Premium small & medium custom displays. Not economical for large video walls.
